Controversy over Kabaddi Cup Pomp and show:Was Badal himself Upset ?
Bathinda: 2 December (A.S.Brar) Punjab Congress Chief Capt Amarinder Singh has condemned the pomp and show displayed by the SAD-BJP led government at Bathinda on the occasion of the opening of the 3rd World Cup kabaddi when the nation was mourning the death of I.K.Gujral former Prime Minister. The issue is likely to cause shiver and trembling in the political scenario of the state in the coming days. As the opposition parties has been given the much required ammunition by the “immature” decision of the managers of the World Cup kabaddi to continue pomp and show despite declaration of the 7 days state mourn by the Parkash Singh Badal government.
Insiders say the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was himself also seen upset over the pomp and show which was done at the opening ceremony. He even left the venue immediately after giving the opening speech just within 15 minutes, but this could not serve the purpose. Political harm has already been done. Though on the advice of Parkash Singh Badal the four hour show was cut to two hours and display of fire works was cancelled, but he could not succeed in getting cancelled the complete pomp and show, as the managers of the event led by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal were footing on the point that Crores of rupees has been paid in advance to cultural groups and film actors. It will not be possible to call off of the entire program. They also drove their point by saying that representatives of 18 countries have already arrived in the state to participate in the event; in such a situation an international event can not be canceled. It is also learnt that some senior Akali leaders also wanted that the govt should avoid such celebrations. It is also learnt that Parkash Singh Badal had even suggested to the sports department to cancel the live telecast of the program as a mark of respect to departed soul, but his suggestion was not accepted. Political observers feel the opposition parties may use this stuff as a tool to corner the SAD-BJP led government in the coming days.
