Chandigarh police on Saturday arrested around 19 protesting farmers including two women for allegedly attacking vehicles of mayor Ravi Kant Sharma and Sanjay Tandon, co-incharge of BJP Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. The police had also detained a 12-year-old boy, who was protesting BJP leaders in Sector 48 here. However, the boy was released by the police after a few minutes.
However, all the people, booked on charge of attempt to murder, were later released by the police from police stations of Sector 31 and Sector 49.
As per the information, mayor Ravi Kant Sharma and Sanjay Tandon had come to attend a function at Motor Market of Sector 48 here. However with the interference of UT police, Ravi Kant and Tandon managed to escape unhurt from there.
The farmers said that they did not attack the vehicles of the leaders as their intention was only to show black flags to them. Satnam Singh, a protester, said, “No one from the farmers hit the vehicle of BJP leaders. They were some planted goons, who pelted stones on cars and also hit rods and sticks on them to shift the blame on farmers. Even the police failed to recover any stone or stick from the detained farmers.”
The situation turned violent at Sector 48 following which SSP Kuldeep Chahal also rushed to the spot. FIRs were also registered against the farmers in this regard.
