Chandigarh, July 9, 2016:
The Haryana government has finally decided to appoint law officers after following proper selection procedures.
For the purpose, the government has also drafted the Haryana Law Officers (Selection and Engagement) Bill, 2016, that is likely to be passed in the Monsoon Session, sources revealed adding that the law officers would now be selected after inviting applications from application who fulfill minimum qualifications fixed by the government.
The minimum qualification for a senior additional advocate general will be a minimum legal practice of 15 years and at least 75 cases in the previous year. For an additional advocate general, it will be 10 years’ practice and 50 cases. For a deputy AG, the criteria would be eight years’ practice and 35 cases.
The Supreme Court of India had framed guidelines for appointments in Haryana and Punjab on the basis of merit and eligibility, and not for “political aggrandisement and appeasement”.
