By Gurbir Singh (Hamilton, New Zealand),16 Feb.,2018:
Vulnerable workers, especially migrants and overseas students, can now have an ace up their sleeve if any disputes arise regarding the hours they have worked for their employer.
As exploitation of potentially vulnerable migrants is fairly common in many countries (incl. New Zealand and Australia), lack of records or evidence makes it difficult for a worker or the Appellate Tribunal or even the Immigration department, to resolve underpayment complaints.
The Fair Work Ombudsman, Australia has come up with an easy solution to stop employees being exploited and underpaid.
It has released an app called ‘Record My Hours’ and is aimed as a backup for workers if an employer fails to properly keep employee records. Data from an employee’s ‘Record My Hours’ app can be checked against the businesses’ records to identify any discrepancies and resolve any issues.
The app is available in 18 languages, including Hindi, to encourage workers from migrant backgrounds to use it and can be downloaded for both Android and iPhone systems.
