As the coronavirus pandemic spreads around us, the world is under lockdown and people are forced to stay home. Schools are closed, offices are shut. We’re going through a very difficult time.
But are we? Who amongst us is the worst affected?
Is it the children who are not going to school or later in evening to their favourite place, the park?
Is it men who have to work from home, in their boxers and T-shirts?
The oldies in the home who cannot go out for their walks and “gupshup” with their fellow retirees?
Is someone missing out?
Yes! The lady of the house!
She’s the only one who is the most affected by the lockdown.
With children, husband and parents at home 24x7, she’s hardly getting time for herself.
The most important person in an Indian woman’s life is her maid, who’s missing these days, for obvious reason.
Uff! It starts right in the morning with “subha ki chai”, followed by cleaning the pan in which it’s made, cups and so on.
Once it gets over next is “ghar ki safai”. With broom in one hand and mop in the other, she’s all set for mission cleanup. And that too she intends to do in the traditional way because her friends suggested that’s the best way to workout.
After about an hour of this backbreaking ‘exercise’, the husband, kids and other family members are eagerly looking forward to her announcing the menu of the day.
After a quick shower she’s back in the kitchen refining her culinary skills by trying out new recipes from Youtube.
Now, when everyone has eaten and looking forward to a nice afternoon nap, her kitchen chores aren’t over as yet because she has to clean the utensils and tidy up things.
This is the time when she remembers Pinki didi and how she admonished for taking a shortcut and not cleaning utensils properly.
Now, when she has to do everything herself, she is thinking hard whether to follow Pinki didi and take shortcuts herself as she is overwhelmed by this unending cycle of chai, cleaning, cooking then cleaning again and so on!
Did I tell you that on top of everything, she is a professional, who works from home! So, the load she is carrying on her shoulders is enormous.
Add to this, her office boss suggesting that nothing short of 100% dedication will do at this time of global recession and on the other hand informing that appraisal will be delayed due to ongoing crisis.
Seeing her plight, what comes to mind is the picture of Goddess Durga with her many hands, executing all her tasks and winning everyone’s heart, be it in the house or beyond.
I hope this pandemic really gets over ASAP so that the lady of the house gets her glow and most importantly her maid back!
