Carbon Footprint
Harmony among all the living species and harmony among all living species and nature is vital to have a balanced and healthy life. The same has become the question of the hour because this harmonious relation is missing somewhere as we humans, being on the path of development have left behind these concerns that are related to our healthy environment. We all know as educated beings that the climate is changing and it is not changing for good. The average temperature of our earth is rising which is again not a good sign and scientists have also declared that we have entered the ‘Holocene extinction’, which is also referred to as Sixth Mass Extinction as whatever we do in the next 10-50 years will define the future of humanity. Are we all conscious enough or are we ready to face the consequences?
Children are studying extensively in their schools about climate change and what is Green House Effect and how it is causing Global Warming but the sad part is that content is just learned as a theory and is not put into practice consciously and we all end up in increasing our ‘Carbon Footprint’. This problem of Global Warming is not subjective to a specific group of people but it is affecting every living being on this planet earth from a tiny microbe to the largest living mammal on earth and of course, we humans are not excluded! When we talk about science and the environment, these subjects can’t be studied by only talking and sitting in the classrooms, these are required to be practiced and applied in our day to day life.
What is a carbon footprint? How does it affect our environment? A Carbon footprint refers to the of number greenhouse gases added to the environment by an individual’s activity. The greenhouse gases like Carbon dioxide, Methane, Nitrous oxide play a major role in causing global warming as they trap the sun’s heat more than required which causes a rise in the temperature of the earth. Though carbon dioxide is an important component of air and is very essential to maintain the regular temperature of the planet and is also the key ingredient in the process of photosynthesis by which plants make their food but as the excess of everything is bad, hence excess of the release of carbon dioxide in the environment is nothing but very harmful for the planet as a whole. You can calculate your carbon footprint by all the daily chores that you perform like the means of travel you use, how frequently you travel, what kind of products you buy that is natural or synthetic, the energy consumption at your home. Do you use energy-efficient equipment at home, do you prefer renewable energy sources, how much electricity you consume, and what is the source of that electricity? The knowledge of all these will help you know about your contribution of carbon dioxide to the environment and can also help to reduce your carbon footprint.
Here are a few ways that can help you to reduce your carbon footprint:
#Regular energy audits of your home.
#Shop sensibly and buy the stuff that is required.
#Choose local food so that you have to travel less.
#Prefer and shop recycled clothing and do not buy fast fashion.
#Avoid flying, if possible as airplanes are the major contributors to carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere.
#Purchasing carbon offsets will be of great help as the money you pay goes towards climate change projects.
The most important thing to do is to spread awareness and stay aware of all the problems that we are creating for our environment. We all need to lead a conscious life where we can live in harmony with every other living being on our planet and with nature.
