Ludhiana, February 6: The International Human Rights Organisation (IHRO) today expressed a serious concern over the lackadaisical approach adopted by the Punjab administration to clean up the Buddha Nullah, despite the fact that the Punjab and Haryana High Court while disposing the petition in this regard had put state’s responsibility to complete the work promptly. Communique issued by IHRO chairperson DS Gill, general secretary Mohinder Singh Grewal, women’s rights counsellor Dr Jiwanjot Kaur and legal coordinator Sukhdev Singh, says that it is really shocking and intriguing how the industrial units continue discharging untreated effluents in the Nullah, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) gets tamed and the ruling class managed, despite the specific directions of the High Court to complete the work at the earliest.
The state high court had taken up this matter suo motu where the IHRO was made petitioner in the writ through Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC), said Gill. He further said that the High Court, while rejecting the IHRO plea of appointing a public monitoring committee to watch and check the work being done to cleanup the Buddha Nullah, had categorically held that ‘it’s a primary duty and responsibility of the government to complete the work efficiently and promptly’.
Still the matter is hanging in the fire, IHRO activists added in their press release. According to the press statement, the IHRO is likely to approach the High Court again in order to speed up the matter of public importance as the people are dying due the pollution spread by this Nullah in Malwa region of Punjab.
