Good News : Semiconductor manufacturing project worth ₹4,594 crore approved for Punjab
Babushahi Bureau
Mohali (Punjab), August 12, 2025 — Punjab is set to play a bigger role in India’s chip-making ambitions, with the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approving a major semiconductor manufacturing expansion project in Mohali under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
The project, by Continental Device India Ltd. (CDIL), will significantly expand its discrete semiconductor manufacturing capacity, producing over 158 million high-power devices annually.
Notably, CDIL semiconductors are used in EVs, renewable energy systems, automotive electronics, aerospace & defence, solar panels, and are also exported worldwide to markets like the US, Europe, China, and Australia.
The upgraded plant will make advanced components such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky diodes, and transistors in both silicon and silicon carbide — key parts for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, industrial automation, power conversion, and telecom infrastructure.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approvals, noting that Punjab’s project is among four new semiconductor units cleared with a combined investment of ₹4,594 crore. The other projects are in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
The government says the move will create high-skill jobs, strengthen India’s self-reliance in electronics manufacturing, and position the country as a global semiconductor hub.
Punjab’s Mohali facility will now be part of a 10-project nationwide portfolio under ISM, with total approved investments exceeding ₹1.6 lakh crore.
