International Day of Biodiversity celebrated at PAU

Ludhiana (Punjab), June 17, 2025: The Department of Forestry and Natural Resources in collaboration with the NSS Unit, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 on June 16 by organizing different events under the theme, ‘Be Part of the Plan.”
The celebration aimed at raising awareness on the subject and sensitization of the students regarding importance of biological diversity.
The event was sponsored by the National Biodiversity Authority through Punjab Biodiversity Board, Punjab State Council of Science and Technology, Chandigarh. Around 250 students participated in the programme.
In addition to expert lecture on “How to Sustain Development and Preserve Biodiversity” by Dr Renu Bhardwaj, Former Professor, Guru Nanak Dev University, the day was marked by poster and slogan writing.
Dr Bhardwaj created good interest among the students on the critical need to conserve natural resources, especially in the wake of the ongoing changes in global climate and habitat destruction due to urbanization and industrialization.
Dr RIS Gill, Estate Officer, PAU, who was the chief guest, pointed out the reasons for the erosion of biodiversity and its conservation through different modes.Dr Navneet Kaur welcomed the guests and conducted the programme. Students participated actively in different competitions coordinated by Dr HS Saralch.
Certificates were provided to the winners of the poster making competition- Ms Jasmandeep Kaur, Ms Dhami Kapila and Ms Mehakpreet Kaur; and slogan writing event - Ms Tanya Kaur, Ms Arppita Sharma and Ms Avreet Kaur- for securing the first, second and the third positions, respectively.
The Head, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, Dr GPS Dhillon, while proposing a vote of thanks, talked about PAU’s pivotal focus on sustainable use of biodiversity and emphasized on conservation of traditional species.
He stated that department has been successfully producing nursery plants of traditional trees since its inception. Later, the dignitaries and the winners of the competitions were honoured with green pots.
