Chandigarh, April 17, 2026: The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to social reform by organizing a pledge-taking programme under the nationwide campaign “Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat,” aimed at eliminating the practice of child marriage.
Senior officials, including MC Commissioner Amit Kumar, IAS, Joint Commissioners, the Chief Engineer, and other officers and staff, collectively took an oath to oppose child marriage and promote the protection and empowerment of children.
Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner termed child marriage a serious social evil and a punishable offence that adversely affects the education, health, and overall development of children, especially girls.
He stressed that its eradication requires strong community participation and vigilant societal action.
During the programme, participants pledged to actively prevent child marriages, ensure that such practices do not occur within their families or surroundings, report any violations to authorities without delay, and promote the education and welfare of children.
Reiterating its commitment, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh said it will further intensify awareness drives and strengthen community engagement to work towards a Child Marriage-Free Bharat.
