Sri Muktsar Sahib, November 2024: Punjab’s Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries Minister, Gurmeet Singh Khudian, inaugurated the 21st Livestock Census in Sri Muktsar Sahib district. This extensive survey, covering 16 species of animals and poultry, marks the second digital execution of the census using a mobile app, following its debut in 2019.
Minister Khudian emphasized the groundbreaking aspects of this year’s census, which includes a focus on the role of women in animal husbandry, the counting of pet dogs by breed, and separate enumeration for cattle in gaushalas and those reared by nomadic tribes. Additionally, data on poultry, livestock-related implements, and farmers' dependence on the sector will also be recorded.
A robust team comprising a state nodal officer, five zonal nodal officers, 23 district nodal officers, 392 supervisors, and 1,962 enumerators will visit approximately 65 lakh households across Punjab to record detailed information on animals, including breed and characteristics. The census is expected to conclude by February 2025.
Director of Animal Husbandry Dr Gursharanjit Singh Bedi assured Minister Khudian that the officers were well-trained to conduct the survey efficiently. Under the guidance of Principal Secretary Rahul Bhandari and Special Secretary Harbir Singh, the census is expected to aid in shaping new welfare policies for livestock farmers in Punjab.
