Chandigarh, August 31, 2026: The Punjab Congress Election Manifesto Committee on Monday announced a state-wide consultation campaign to prepare a comprehensive “People’s Manifesto” for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The decision was taken at a detailed strategy meeting held at the Punjab Congress Bhawan.
The consultation exercise will formally begin from Amritsar, after which members of the committee will visit every district of Punjab. Full-day consultations will be held in each district, involving District Congress Committee presidents, MPs, MLAs, senior party leaders and candidates who contested the 2022 Assembly elections.
The committee will also invite written suggestions and demands from journalists, intellectuals, civil society organisations and members of the public, with the aim of ensuring that the manifesto reflects the issues and aspirations of people across Punjab.
Congress Targets BJP Over Constitution
Addressing the media after the meeting, committee leaders reiterated the ideological position articulated by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, saying that the country is witnessing a battle between those defending the Constitution framed under the leadership of Dr B.R. Ambedkar and the RSS-BJP combine, which they accused of working against constitutional values and equality.
The leaders criticised the alleged ‘shuddhi-karan’ (purification) rituals carried out by BJP-linked elements after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, a Dalit leader, addressed a gathering. They questioned why action was not being taken against those allegedly practising untouchability, which is prohibited under law, and instead an FIR was lodged against Rahul Gandhi for raising the issue.
The Congress leaders said the party would continue to oppose what they described as “vendetta politics” and would not be intimidated.
Congress Claims BJP-Akali Nexus
On the 2027 Assembly elections, the manifesto committee leaders claimed that the political situation in Punjab was becoming clear and alleged a tacit understanding between the Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP.
They said the people of Punjab were aware of the alleged political understanding and expressed confidence that the Congress would make a strong comeback in the 2027 Assembly elections.
The meeting was chaired by Dr Amar Singh, MP from Fatehgarh Sahib and Chairman of the Manifesto Committee. Co-Chairpersons Gurjeet Singh Aujla, MP from Amritsar; former minister Pargat Singh; former MLA Hardial Singh Kamboj; and senior leader Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria were also present.
