Why Ropeways are champions of sustainable public transport
New Delhi, November 8, 2024: This year, the theme for World Public Transport Day is ‘Connecting Communities, Reducing Emissions’. No better green mobility solution than ropeways to bring down carbon emissions caused by pollution and save the world from going completely grey!
In a step-forward approach to encourage more Indian companies to build the right infrastructure and ecosystem to promote more ropeways in India, last year, the government announced eight more ropeway projects worth Rs.4,000 cr. under the Parvatmala Scheme.
This initiative was aimed at boosting India’s domestic and international tourism and provide an eco-friendly mobility solution for challenging terrains.
Ropeways not only enhance connectivity across tough hilly terrains that are inaccessible through other modes of transport, but also to create more environmental consciousness among people and cut down urban congestion.
Building ropeways is significantly less cumbersome than traditional road and rail infrastructure. Since they are built above the ground, they minimise deforestation and don’t disrupt the natural habitat of the flora and fauna of the region.
Additionally, since they are electrically powered, they have the potential to reduce traffic emissions and improve air quality in our most densely populated cities.
Empyrean Skyview Projects (A unit of FIL Industries Private Limited) has pioneered green mobility solutions in India, operating India’s first PPP ropeway project connecting Jammu’s Sanget Valley and Patnitop. The gondola is housed on the property of Skyview by Empyrean, a mountain harbour that blends luxury, adventure, hospitality and luxury.
Built in 2019 after being in construction for just 2.4 years with not a single tree being cut, this Skyview gondola has reduced travel time between the two points from 40 minutes to a mere 10-12 minutes, making it a game-changer for tourism and transportation in the region.
The FIL Industries-led consortium is also currently building India’s longest ropeway system connecting Dehradun-Mussoorie, Phase I of which will be ready by September, 2026.
The 5.8 Km long ropeway will cut down travel time in the hilly terrain from 1.5 hours to just 15 minutes, without contributing to carbon emissions in any way. Collaborating with E.R.I.C ropeway solutions and POMA, FIL Industries has combined advanced technology with a strong focus on environmental stewardship.
The group has enhanced tourism and making a significant contribution to urban mobility solutions, supporting India’s vision of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development.
