Chandigarh, August 24, 2024: The Punjab government has taken swift action to make public transport safer for the general public, women, and children. Recently, the Punjab government signed an agreement with the IT company C-DAC to initiate this project.
Following the case of rape and murder of a female doctor in a Kolkata hospital, there has been a nationwide demand for improved women's safety. In response, the Punjab government is taking serious steps to ensure the safety of women in public transport.
Punjab Transport Secretary Dilraj Singh stated, "This initiative is a crucial step towards ensuring safer and more efficient public transportation for the people of Punjab. We aim to create a more secure environment for women and children and enhance passenger safety by leveraging technology."
Under this project, all buses and taxis in Punjab will be equipped with panic buttons and GPS systems. This will enable the tracking of a vehicle's location in the event of an emergency.
If a woman is in trouble, she can press the panic button, which will immediately send a message to the Command Control Center and the police, along with the vehicle's location.
The Punjab government has assigned the responsibility of monitoring this entire project to C-DAC, an IT unit under the Ministry of electronics and Information Technology.
Although the project had been stalled for several months, a meeting between transport department officials and C-DAC representatives has now taken place to implement it. C-DAC's "Suraksha Mitr" platform will serve as the backbone of the Command Control Center, enabling real-time tracking of vehicles, monitoring panic buttons, analyzing driving behavior, and detecting accidents.
