Weightlifter Gurkaran Singh to be felicitated by commendation award on Independence Day

Chandigarh, August 14, 2024: Gurkaran Singh, a dedicated weightlifter who began his career seven years ago at the Sports Complex in Sector 42, Chandigarh, under the guidance of coach Karanbir Singh Buttar, is set to receive a commendation award on Independence Day.
Over the years, he has secured five gold medals at the Chandigarh state level. In January 2024, he represented UT Chandigarh in the Junior National Weightlifting Championships held in Itanagar, where he won a gold medal by lifting 136 kg in snatch and 169 kg in clean and jerk, totaling 305 kg.
Following this, Gurkaran clinched a silver medal at the All India Inter-University Weightlifting Championships with a total lift of 301 kg.
He then achieved another milestone by winning a gold medal at the Khelo India University Games, where he set a record with a lift of 140 kg in snatch and 167 kg in clean and jerk, totaling 307 kg. This commendation on Independence Day is a recognition of his dedication and achievements in the sport of weightlifting.
