Canada: Pro Left Punjab student leader of 1960s Darshan Singh Baghi passes away
Edmonton, August 30, 2024: Pro-left Punjab Student leader of 60s Darshan Singh Baghi passed away in Edmonton Canada on August 25, 2025. He was 88.
Darshan Baghi was one of founders of Punjab Students Union(PSU). He was most popular leader of PSU prior to Pirthipal Singh Randhawa. In seventies he shifted to Edmonton in Canada, where he wrote History of PSU, with Darshan Khaira name, a credible source book on radical student movement in Punjab. Hazari Prasad Divedi the great Hindi scholar then Tagore Professor and HoD of Hindi dept. In PU Chandigarh, presided presided over its Chandigarh founding session in 1965. During the rise of Naxalite movement in 60s Baghi was arrested and remained in jail under Prevention Detention Act (PD Act ) .
Prof Chaman Lal, prominent writer and researcher has paid tributes to his role in organising Democratic student movement in Punjab.
According to Prof. Chaman Lal he never met Baghi in Punjab, but was able to spend some time with him in Edmonton during his visit to deliver lecture on Bhagat Singh in 2011. He paid rich tributes to his role in organising popular Democratic student movement in Punjab… Alvida Darshan Baghi!
