Richmond (British Columbia), November 12, 2024: Richmond Multicultural Community Services (RMCS) celebrated Diwali and Bandi Chhore Divas at Caring Place in Richmond on Monday, November 4.
The packed room of attendees was treated to several multicultural entertainment items and delicious food.
Balwant Sanghera shared with the audience a brief history of Diwali and Bandi Chhore Divas. Both of these celebrations are popular in India and the South Asian diaspora around the globe.
Diwali, popularly known as the festival of lights was started thousands of years ago when the Hindu god Ram, his wife Sita, and younger brother Laxshman returned to their kingdom's capital city of Ayodhya in central India after completing their 14-year exile and the public had a big celebration on this occasion.
Sikhs celebrate the release of their sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind ji's release from Gwalior Fort, and return to Amritsar in Punjab along with 52 chieftains all of whom had been imprisoned by Mughal king Jehangir on false pretenses. The RMCS staff did an excellent job in making this celebration very enjoyable for everyone. Balwant Sanghera
