MLA Bhullar pays tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh on his 125th birth anniversary
Ferozepur, December 26, 2024: To honour the legacy as a symbol of India’s relentless pursuit of justice for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, MLA Ranbir Singh Bhullar commemorated the 125th birth anniversary of Shaheed Udham Singh at Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk in Ferozepur. Paying floral tributes to the revolutionary hero, Bhullar extended greetings to the district residents on this special occasion, emphasizing the enduring inspiration derived from Udham Singh's sacrifice and patriotism.
Udham Singh (born Sher Singh; 26 December 1899 – 31 July 1940) was an Indian revolutionary associated with the Ghadar Party and the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). He is best known for assassinating Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab, on March 13, 1940. This act was carried out as retribution for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 in Amritsar, where Singh himself was a survivor. Subsequently, he was tried, convicted, and hanged in July 1940. While in custody, Singh adopted the name 'Ram Mohammad Singh Azad,' symbolizing India's three major religions and his anti-colonial sentiment.
Speaking at the event, MLA Bhullar highlighted Shaheed Udham Singh's unparalleled example of patriotism, recalling how he avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre 21 years later and laid down his life fighting against oppression. Bhullar praised the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, for its significant efforts to honour the legacy of the nation’s martyrs. He urged citizens to educate the youth about the sacrifices of these great revolutionaries, who continue to inspire generations.
The event was attended by prominent personalities, including Raj Bahadur Singh, Himanshu Thakkar, Baldev Singh Malli, Harmeet Singh Khai, Jagdeep Handa Mintu, Jugraj Sarpanch Nizamwala, Nirmaljeet Sarpanch Rajjiwala, Gulshan Gakhar (Block President), and Pradeep Chopra (Block President).
