Los Angeles, January 23, 2025:
A rapidly spreading wildfire, dubbed the Hughes Fire, ignited near Castaic Lake in Los Angeles County on Wednesday morning, scorching approximately 9,400 acres by evening. The blaze has prompted mandatory evacuation orders for over 31,000 residents, with an additional 23,000 under evacuation warnings.
The fire's rapid expansion is attributed to strong winds and dry conditions, with gusts currently at 42 mph and expected to increase to 60 mph by late evening and Thursday. Approximately 4,000 firefighters, supported by aerial resources, are actively combating the blaze, which remains at 0% containment.
The Hughes Fire adds to the challenges faced by California's firefighting resources, already engaged with the Eaton and Palisades fires in the Los Angeles area. Authorities have issued warnings and evacuation orders, emphasizing an immediate threat to life, particularly in the Castaic Lake area.
