Bilaspur Farmer Hariman Sharma to Receive Padma Shri for Revolutionizing Apple Cultivation in Hotter Regions

Hariman Sharma, a pioneering apple farmer from Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, has been selected for the prestigious Padma Shri Award for his groundbreaking contribution to agriculture. He developed the HRMN 99 apple variety, which thrives in warmer climates at altitudes as low as 1,800 feet above sea level, transforming apple cultivation in non-traditional areas.
A Breakthrough in Apple Farming
The HRMN 99 apple variety, resistant to the devastating scab disease, has become a game-changer for orchardists. This innovative apple strain has been adopted by over 1 lakh farmers, with more than 14 lakh plants cultivated across India and internationally, including in Nepal, Bangladesh, Zambia, and Germany.
The National Innovation Foundation has also planted 33,000 HRMN 99 saplings across all 29 Indian states for further research and widespread adoption. In total, Hariman Sharma has distributed 1.9 lakh apple saplings to more than 6,000 farmers, significantly boosting agricultural income and sustainability in the region.
A Diverse Orchard and Global Impact
Beyond apples, Hariman cultivates mangoes, kiwis, and pomegranates in his orchard, showcasing his versatility as a farmer. His contributions extend beyond Himachal Pradesh, with HRMN 99 making a mark on international soil.

Hariman Sharma will be conferred with the Padma Shri in the "Others (Agriculture - Apple)" category, acknowledging his dedication and innovation in transforming the lives of countless farmers while strengthening the agricultural economy.
