Flying High, Cutting Deep: 183 Spools of deadly Chinese Manjha seized in January, 2 held
Ferozepur, January 27, 2025: Flying High, Cutting Deep is the risk of using Chinese Manjha. Despite strict government orders and a ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2016, the sale of deadly Chinese manjha continues unabated. In a major crackdown, Ferozepur police seized 105 spools of the banned thread and arrested three individuals—Gurjit Singh, Jasvir Singh, and Kuldeep Singh from Basti Piareana. This brings the total recovery for January to 183 spools.
The Chinese manjha, coated with glass fragments, poses severe risks to humans, animals, and birds. Its use is prohibited under the Wildlife Protection Act, of 1972, and the Environment Protection Act, of 1986. Sukhwinder Singh, DSP, revealed that the accused were caught selling the thread under the "Event Radhe Radhe" guise after a tip-off led to a raid.
With the Basant festival approaching on February 2, authorities are intensifying their efforts to trace the supply chain. DSP Singh urged citizens to be vigilant, noting the lethal threat potential for harm to pedestrians, motorcyclists, and animals. “We are conducting day-and-night checks to curb this menace and ensure strict action against violators,” he said.
Pardeep Dhawan, President of the Senior Citizens Forum, emphasised the cultural significance of kite flying while condemning the use of Chinese manjha. “This once-innocent tradition now threatens wildlife and public safety. Awareness programs and stringent enforcement are essential to prevent tragedies,” he remarked.
He added that screenings of the film Manjha Menace by Wildlife SOS should be made mandatory in schools, colleges, and cinema halls during the festive season to educate the youth about the hazards of the killer thread.
