Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), April 6, 2025: In a series of major decisions, the Himachal Pradesh Cabinet led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has approved a hike in the minimum bus fare in the state, doubling it from ₹5 to ₹10 for travel up to three kilometers.
While the general fare remains unchanged at ₹2.19 per kilometer for distances beyond that, the revised minimum fare is expected to impact daily commuters.
Industry Minister Harshvardhan Chauhan, addressing a press conference, stated that the decision was taken to support state-run HRTC and private bus operators, many of whom have been struggling with operational costs.
Though intended to offer relief to transport service providers, the move is likely to burden the common man, particularly in rural and hilly areas where short-distance travel is common.
Key Cabinet Decisions:
? Reclamation of Power Projects
In a strategic energy move, the Cabinet has decided to take back five hydroelectric projects currently under SJVN and NHPC. This includes four under-construction projects and the Bairasul project, which has completed 40 years. The state plans to construct and manage the remaining work itself, and an evaluation agency will be appointed to assess the investments made so far by these companies.
? Regularization of Workers
The Sukhu government has also approved a progressive step towards workforce welfare by ordering the regularization of contract, daily wage, and part-time workers across departments, fulfilling a long-standing demand from labor unions and social activists.
? Healthcare Boost
To strengthen critical healthcare infrastructure, a 50-bedded Critical Care Block has been approved in Bilaspur and Rohru. This aims to enhance emergency and intensive care services in these regions, reducing patient load on major hospitals.
? Better Stipend for Doctors
In a move to retain medical talent in the state, the stipend for doctors has been increased to ₹1.30 lakh per month, a significant boost that may help address the shortage of healthcare professionals in government facilities.
? Auction of Liquor Contracts
The government has also decided to re-auction 400 liquor contracts, a step likely aimed at increasing revenue and ensuring fair trade practices in the excise sector.
