Chandigarh, April 9, 2025: In a significant development in the case involving the alleged assault of senior Army officer Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath by Punjab Police officials in Patiala, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a fair and impartial probe.
Following the court’s directive, Chandigarh Police has constituted the SIT, which will be led by IPS officer Manjeet Sheoran, a 2015 batch officer known for his sharp investigative acumen.
Currently holding a key position within the Chandigarh Police, Sheoran has now been entrusted with leading the investigation into this sensitive matter.
SIT composition and mandate
The SIT will consist of four members, including:
- One Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)
- One Inspector
- One Sub-Inspector
The team has been given a clear timeline of four months to complete the investigation and submit a report to the court.
Colonel Bath’s family had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking justice, expressing concerns over alleged police misconduct and requesting that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The High Court, however, decided to assign the case to Chandigarh Police and ordered the formation of an SIT, raising hopes of a fair investigation.
