Chandigarh, April 12, 2025: A crucial meeting of the Shiromani Akali Dal is underway today at the historic Teja Singh Samundri Hall, where the party is expected to announce its new president.
The key question echoing through political circles is whether former party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal will return to lead the Akali Dal, or if a new face will take charge. Prominent names being discussed for the top post include Balwinder Singh Bhunder, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Bikram Singh Majithia, and Sukhbir Singh Badal himself.

This development comes after a tumultuous period in the party’s history. On December 2nd, in a dramatic and unprecedented move, Sukhbir Singh Badal and other Akali leaders were declared "Tankhaiya" (guilty of religious misconduct) by the Shri Akal Takht Sahib and given religious punishment, leading to Sukhbir’s resignation from party leadership.
In his absence, Balwinder Singh Bhunder was appointed as the acting president to steer the party through a challenging phase.
With Baisakhi around the corner, the Akali Dal appears eager to signal a fresh beginning. The leadership decision, expected by this afternoon, could significantly shape the party’s future ahead of the next political season.
All eyes are now on the outcome of today’s meeting — will the reins return to Sukhbir Singh Badal, or will the Akali Dal mark a new chapter under a different leader?
