Defence Ministry directs media to avoid live coverage of security operations
Ministry of Defence Issues Advisory on Media Coverage of Defence Operations
By Zinnia Balli
New Delhi, May 9, 2025: The Ministry of Defence has issued a stern advisory to all media channels, digital platforms, and individuals, urging them to refrain from live coverage or real-time reporting of defence operations and the movement of security forces.
The advisory highlights that disclosing sensitive or source-based information during such operations can compromise operational effectiveness and put lives at risk.
The Ministry cited past incidents such as the Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking as critical examples of the dangers posed by premature or uncontrolled reporting.
Under Clause 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, only periodic briefings by designated officials are authorized during anti-terror operations. The Ministry emphasized that all stakeholders must exercise vigilance, sensitivity, and responsibility in their coverage, upholding the highest standards of journalism in the service of the nation.
The Ministry has called upon media organizations and individuals to cooperate fully and ensure that operational details remain confidential until officially released.
