BSF Jawan Shaw released after 21 days in Pakistani custody
Ferozepur, May 14, 2025: Today, BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since 23 April 2025, was handed over to India at about 1030 hours through the Joint Check Post Attari, Amritsar. The handover was conducted peacefully and in accordance with established protocols, conformed PRO, Punjab Frontier, BSF.
Today, hope turned into relief for Shaw’s family and hometown as he was finally brought back to Indian soil after 21 days in Pakistani custody.
Added here, hours after the terror attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, Pakistani forces detained the BSF constable after he reportedly dozed off under a tree in Pakistani territory along the international border in Punjab’s Ferozepur.
However, there is also reported to be communication maintained only from a distance of 30 to 40 meters and released two images of Shaw, one with his face covered and another showing his weapons placed on the ground, indicating a breakdown in standard border protocols and reluctance to facilitate his return. As luck would have it, the BSF captured a Pakistani Rangers jawan from the international border near Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan on May 3 after he illegally entered India at Raisingh Nagar.
The jawan’s wife, a resident of West Bengal, had travelled to Chandigarh, Ferozepur in Punjab, Amritsar and Delhi for approaching the various authorities to take up the matter for release of his husband.
Efforts to secure his release were initially taken up during flag meetings between Indian and Pakistani forces. However, the talks came to a halt just days before India launched retaliatory strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the Pahalgam terror attack. The escalation had left Shaw’s family in a state of deep anxiety, fearing that diplomatic efforts for his release would be derailed.
