Chandigarh, May 14, 2025: In a significant development in the ongoing inter-state water dispute, the High Court has acknowledged Punjab’s reconsideration plea as a serious matter and has issued a formal notice to the Haryana government.
The plea pertains to the contentious issue of river water sharing, a long-standing and politically sensitive subject in northern India.
The court also raised concerns over the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) Chairman’s altered stance on the distribution of water, seeking an explanation for the shift. Additionally, both the BBMB and the Haryana government have been directed to clarify why Haryana is demanding additional water from shared resources.
This judicial move is being seen as a major diplomatic success for the Punjab government. Political observers believe it strengthens Punjab’s position in its ongoing fight for equitable water rights.
Reacting to the development, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which governs Punjab, called the court's action a crucial step forward.
“We will not let Punjab’s rightful share of water be taken away. We are ready to fight this battle on every platform,” said an AAP spokesperson. The party further stated that this judicial decision could become a turning point in Punjab's decades-long struggle for water justice.
