Tarn Taran Sarpanch shot over Panchayat land dispute

Tarn Taran (Punjab), June 4, 2025 – Tension gripped Chela village in Tarn Taran district on Wednesday after a violent dispute over panchayat land led to a brutal attack on the sitting Sarpanch.
The accused, identified as Jajbir Singh, allegedly shot the Sarpanch when he tried to stop him from illegally plowing village-owned land.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when Jajbir Singh attempted to forcibly cultivate the disputed panchayat land.Upon being confronted by the current Sarpanch, a heated argument broke out, following which Jajbir allegedly opened fire.
The Sarpanch sustained serious injuries from the gunshot and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
“He tried to occupy the land forcefully,” say villagers
Residents of the village claim that Jajbir Singh had been trying to take illegal possession of the community land for some time.
“When the Sarpanch opposed him, he tried to kill him in broad daylight. We want justice,” said a local villager.
Heavy police deployment, investigation underway
Soon after the incident, a large police contingent arrived at the scene and began a thorough investigation.
To prevent any further escalation, additional police forces have been deployed in the village. Authorities are also collecting statements from witnesses and securing the area.
Villagers demand strict action.
Angry villagers have demanded the immediate arrest of Jajbir Singh and a case of attempt to murder to be registered against him. “This is not just an attack on one man, but on the rule of law and village governance,” said a community elder.
Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered and efforts are on to apprehend the accused. “No one will be allowed to take the law into their hands,” a senior police officer assured.
