Chandigarh, June 14, 2025: Amid a fresh uptick in COVID-19 cases, the Punjab government has issued a public advisory urging caution and preventive measures. The advisory follows a noticeable surge in infections across the state, particularly in Ludhiana, which has emerged as the current hotspot.
According to the Punjab Health Department, active Covid cases in the state have jumped from just 12 a week ago to over 35 now. The steepest rise has been observed in Ludhiana, which has reported 23 new cases, attributed in part to ongoing political gatherings, summer travel, and increased public movement due to election campaigning.
Health authorities have also confirmed two Covid-related deaths from Ludhiana.
A 69-year-old woman, who was undergoing treatment at PGIMER Chandigarh, and a 39-year-old man, who was admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, have succumbed to the infection.
Officials noted that both had pre-existing medical conditions and a recent travel history, which made them more vulnerable to complications. In light of the developments, the state government has urged residents to practice Covid-appropriate behavior, especially in public gatherings and crowded areas.
