Heat Wave in Punjab: Three dead, red alert issued in several districts

Chandigarh, June 14, 2025: The ongoing severe heat wave across Punjab has turned deadly, claiming three lives so far, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts in the state.
According to reports, two new fatalities were recorded on Friday — one in Moga and another in Pathankot. Both deceased individuals remain unidentified at this stage.These deaths follow an earlier casualty reported in Amritsar, bringing the total heat-related death toll in the state to three.
The situation remains grim as temperatures continue to soar, with Bathinda recording a maximum of 46°C, a full six degrees above normal for this time of year.
Speaking on the current weather pattern, Surendra Pal, Director of the Meteorological Department in Chandigarh, said the monsoon is expected to reach Punjab by June 25. However, pre-monsoon rains are likely to bring some relief before that.
In the meantime, the red alert remains in place, and residents are advised to:
- Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours.
- Stay hydrated.
- Check on vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and children.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging the public to follow health advisories to prevent further heat-related incidents.
