India abstains from UNGA vote on Gaza ceasefire; Congress slams Modi Govt

New Delhi, June 14, 2025: The Indian National Congress on Saturday strongly criticized the Union Government for abstaining from a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) vote demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, calling the move "extremely shameful."
In a sharp post on social media platform X, the Congress said India had historically stood by Palestine and supported global peace and human dignity, but that legacy now stood "reduced to rubble."
"It is extremely shameful that India abstained from voting on the Gaza ceasefire at the UNGA on June 12, 2025… More than 60,000 lives have been lost in Palestine, most of them women and children. Thousands are starving and dying, and international aid has stopped. This is a humanitarian tragedy,” the post read.
The party alleged that India had abandoned its founding principles and “bowed down to Tel Aviv,” stating that real global leadership requires moral courage.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal also condemned the abstention, pointing out that India is now the only country in South Asia, BRICS, and the SCO to abstain from a resolution calling for a Gaza ceasefire.
“India has always stood for peace, justice, and human dignity. But today, India stands alone… 60,000 killed. Most of them women and children. Thousands starving. A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding,” Venugopal said in a separate post.
The UNGA resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza was adopted on Friday with 149 votes in favour, 12 against, and 19 abstentions, including India.
The resolution comes amid mounting global concern over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which has seen extensive civilian casualties and restricted international aid.
