Chandigarh, June 16, 2025 — Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar has formally written to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann demanding a high-level judicial probe into the drug money trail in the state, to be conducted under the supervision of the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Jakhar raised serious concerns about the political and bureaucratic patronage enabling the flourishing of drug cartels in Punjab.
“The recovery of narcotics worth several thousands of crores of rupees in Punjab is not a coincidence — it’s a sign of a deeply rooted rot,” he stated.
He asserted that without a credible investigation into the financial trail, the state government's anti-drug campaign is "nothing but a farce."
Highlighting the sudden rise in wealth among certain politicians, Jakhar said, “MLAs who once rode bicycles now drive luxury cars worth crores and own sprawling farmhouses. The fortunes of many have changed dramatically in the last few years.”
He insisted that tracking the flow of drug money is essential to unmask and bring to justice the “mighty and powerful end beneficiaries,” whether they are politicians from any party or officials complicit in the network.
“Drug cartels cannot thrive without some form of protection,” Jakhar emphasized, underscoring the need for an impartial investigation free from political interference.
The Punjab BJP has long accused the state administration of failing to tackle the drug menace at its roots, often limiting its crackdown to small-time offenders while ignoring the larger nexus.
Jakhar’s letter puts additional pressure on the Mann government to back its anti-drug rhetoric with concrete, transparent action.
