Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh near danger mark amid heavy rainfall
Public urged to stay away
Babushahi Bureau
Chandigarh, July 21, 2025: Continuous rainfall since Monday morning has caused widespread waterlogging in several parts of Chandigarh and led to a sharp rise in the water level of Sukhna Lake, bringing it just one foot below the danger mark.
As of Monday morning, the lake's water level was recorded at 1162.10 feet, while the danger level stands at 1163 feet. With the Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours, a high alert has been declared around the lake area.
Authorities on High Alert
Teams from the Municipal Corporation and local police are stationed around the lake, monitoring the situation closely. The water level is being tracked hourly.
Should the rainfall continue at the current rate, the administration has announced plans to open the floodgates of the lake to release excess water into the Sukhna Choe (drainage channel) — a preventive step to avert potential urban flooding.
Officials have clarified that the situation is currently under control, and there is no cause for panic.
Residents have been urged to stay away from the lakefront for safety reasons. Continuous surveillance and field reporting are underway to manage the situation proactively.
The Municipal Corporation has activated the entire city drainage network, with teams deployed for cleaning and real-time monitoring in vulnerable areas. Senior civic officials are on high alert to coordinate immediate response if needed.
Citizens are advised not to believe in rumors and to follow official guidelines. In case of emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact designated helpline numbers.
