Big news on Smart Meter to be installed in Punjab- Union Minister gives key updates in Parliament

Chandigarh, July 29, 2025: In a major revelation in Parliament, the Central Government disclosed that the rollout of smart electricity meters in Punjab has seen zero implementation, despite approval for 89 lakh meters under a central scheme.
Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that not a single smart meter has been installed in Punjab so far. The statement has sparked concerns over the execution of the scheme at the state level and raised serious questions about the Punjab government’s commitment and preparedness.
The stalled progress is largely attributed to strong resistance from farmer organizations, which have warned of widespread protests if any attempts are made to install smart meters. Given the potential for unrest, the Punjab government appears to have suspended the installation drive, despite initial orders being issued.
While the Centre continues to push for nationwide implementation of smart metering to improve efficiency and reduce power theft, Punjab’s rollout has hit a deadlock.
The state government now faces the critical challenge of engaging with farmer groups to find a resolution and move forward with the project. The Centre’s remarks have once again highlighted the gap between policy announcements and ground implementation in Punjab.
