Nawanshahr (Punjab), July 30, 2025 – Tensions flared in Punjab as hundreds of farmers hit the streets in Nawanshahr on Wednesday, staging a massive tractor march to protest the state’s controversial Land Pooling Policy.
The demonstration was held under the banner of the United Kisan Morcha (SKM), with protestors demanding the immediate withdrawal of the policy, which they claim threatens fertile agricultural land.
The farmers, raising slogans against the Punjab government, warned that if their concerns are ignored, they will intensify their agitation across the state.A memorandum highlighting their demands was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Nawanshahr.
The uproar centers around the planned acquisition of 384 acres of fertile land in Mahalon village under the land pooling framework. Farmer leaders fear the move will dispossess local farmers of productive land and impact their livelihoods.
Leading the protest, SKM leaders Surinder Singh Bains, Kuljinder Singh Mahalon, Ranjit Singh, and Bhupinder Singh Waraich leveled serious allegations at the government.
They accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of trying to hand over agricultural land to corporate entities at meager rates, branding the state administration as "BJP's B-team."
“This government is operating at the behest of Delhi and the Centre. It is determined to destroy Punjab’s agriculture and farmer economy,” alleged Surinder Singh Bains.
The farmer leaders vowed to resist what they see as corporate takeover of Punjab’s farmland and warned that AAP leaders would face resistance if they attempt to enter villages in the future.
The protest in Nawanshahr signals growing rural unrest in Punjab, as farmer unions prepare for a broader movement to safeguard farmland and oppose policies perceived as anti-farmer.
