Chandigarh, August 8, 2025: The Punjab government has declared a 5-kilometre radius near Mohali as a ‘Red Zone’ after confirming the presence of Glanders, a highly dangerous and incurable disease in horses.
The alert was triggered when a horse in a Mohali village tested positive for Glanders, a contagious disease that can also spread to humans, posing serious health risks.
Following confirmation, the state’s Animal Husbandry Department swiftly implemented strict measures:
- Red Zone: Complete ban on the movement of horses within a 5 km radius of the affected area.
- Screening Zone: Horses within 5–25 km will undergo screening and close monitoring.
- Police Action: Punjab Police have enforced the movement ban, including on government-owned horses, to contain the spread.
Authorities have urged horse owners and the public to fully cooperate to prevent further transmission.
