Patna (Bihar), September 17, 2025: In a major development, the Patna High Court has taken strict action in the controversy surrounding an AI-generated deepfake video involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother Heeraben Modi. The court directed the Congress party to immediately remove the disputed video from all social media platforms. The order was passed during a hearing by Acting Chief Justice P.B. Bajantari’s bench.
What is the matter?
On September 10, the official Bihar Congress X handle shared an AI-generated video showing a Modi-like figure dreaming about his mother, Heeraben, who rebukes him for allegedly misusing her name for political gain. The video claimed:
"First, you made me stand in long queues during demonetisation. Now in Bihar, you are using my name for politics, printing banners and posters to insult me. How low will you stoop in the name of politics?"
BJP’s protest and legal action
- The BJP strongly objected to the video, calling it an insult to the Prime Minister and his late mother.
- The party approached the Patna High Court seeking its removal.
- On September 13, the Delhi Police also registered an FIR against Bihar Congress based on a complaint by BJP worker Sanket Gupta. The FIR alleged the video tarnishes PM Modi’s image and violates the dignity of women.
Congress and JDU reactions
- Congress’s defense: Party media head Pawan Khera said the video was not disrespectful and merely depicted “a mother teaching her child the principles of raj dharma.” He added that the party had launched an internal inquiry into the matter.
- JDU’s stand: Party spokesperson Neeraj Kumar welcomed the High Court’s decision, calling the video socially and morally unjust. He remarked, “This verdict is a mirror to those who claim the Constitution is under threat. The judiciary exists because of the Constitution, and making derogatory remarks about someone’s mother is a punishable offence.”
