Chandigarh, October 14, 2025: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met the family of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar at their residence in Chandigarh, spending nearly an hour with them. Gandhi accused the state government of failing to fulfil promises made to the bereaved family and demanded that authorities accept the family’s demands so that they can conduct Kumar’s funeral.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Gandhi alleged that Kumar and his family had suffered caste-based discrimination for years, stating, “it is absolutely clear that this Dalit couple has faced discrimination not just for days or weeks, but for years.” He said the Haryana Chief Minister had not honoured his word to the officer’s family and urged both the Prime Minister and state government to deliver on their assurances.

“This is not just about one family; millions of Dalit brothers and sisters across the country are getting the wrong message — that no matter how capable you are, you can still be suppressed and crushed,” Gandhi remarked.
He called upon the Prime Minister and the Haryana Chief Minister to “stop this farce” and take immediate action against officers accused in the case. Gandhi also stressed that officers named in the complaint should be arrested, as the family is under “tremendous pressure” and deserves justice and respect.

The officer’s family has refused consent for Kumar's post-mortem and cremation until their demands for action against the accused are met. IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch Haryana cadre officer, allegedly died by suicide on October 7, leaving behind a detailed note accusing eight senior IPS officers of caste-based harassment and abuse. The state government has since sent DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on leave, and the investigation into the case continues.
