New Delhi, October 14, 2025: BJP National Spokesperson RP Singh on Tuesday met Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to appeal for the compassionate release of Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar, citing humanitarian and medical grounds.
In his statement following the meeting, Singh said his request was “purely humanitarian,” emphasizing that Bhullar has already spent 28 years in prison and has been undergoing treatment for schizophrenia for more than 14 years.
“The Supreme Court itself commuted his death sentence to life in 2014, acknowledging the inordinate delays and his precarious health,” Singh noted.
He pointed out that despite a 2019 directive from the Central Government concurring with Bhullar’s remission, the former professor remains incarcerated. Singh also highlighted that the Delhi Sentence Review Board has repeatedly denied his release, urging a reconsideration on compassionate and human dignity grounds.
“This is not about the crime, for which he has served a sentence, but about mercy and a chance for a mentally ailing man,” Singh said.
He expressed hope that the Chief Minister would intervene and facilitate Bhullar’s release, stating that it would be “a gesture of compassion long overdue.” Bhullar, convicted in the 1993 Delhi bomb blast case, has been in prison since 1995 and has been under medical supervision for chronic mental illness.
