₹764 Crore Ferozepur–Patti rail link gets ‘Green Signal’; Project to revive Historic route and boost Punjab’s connectivity
Ferozepur, November 12, 2025: In a major infrastructural boost for Punjab, the Ministry of Railways has sanctioned the much-awaited Ferozepur–Patti Rail Link Project, spanning 25.72 km at an estimated cost of ₹764.19 crore, including ₹166 crore for land acquisition to be borne by the Railways.
Announcing the approval, Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu said the project holds immense strategic and economic importance, as it will reduce the distance between Ferozepur and Amritsar from 196 km to nearly 100 km, and shorten the Jammu–Ferozepur–Fazilka–Mumbai corridor by 236 km.
Originally sanctioned in April 2017 at a cost of ₹299.74 crore, the project faced prolonged delays due to land acquisition issues. With the Ministry’s renewed sanction, it is now placed on the fast track for execution, aiming to connect Punjab’s border districts—Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Ferozepur—and develop an economic corridor linking Punjab with Gujarat ports.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Bittu called the project a “historic gift to Punjab.” He said the new line will connect the Jalandhar–Ferozepur and Patti–Khemkaran routes, offering an alternative rail connection close to the international border and enabling swift movement of defence personnel and equipment.
Beyond its strategic role, the project is expected to deliver major socio-economic benefits, impacting around 10 lakh people and generating nearly 2.5 lakh employment opportunities. It will cater to 2,500–3,500 daily passengers, particularly benefiting students, employees, and patients from nearby villages.
Bittu added that the link will boost trade and industrial activity, lower freight costs, and improve access to agricultural markets, thereby enhancing investment in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. It will also connect Amritsar—a key commercial and religious centre attracting over one lakh tourists daily—with Ferozepur, reviving a historic route lost during Partition and cutting the Ferozepur–Khemkaran distance from 294 km to 110 km.
