Amritsar (Punjab), June 29, 2026: In a significant development, the Sri Akal Takht on Monday directed the Punjab government to put the Jagat Jyoti Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026 on hold until objections raised by Sikh religious bodies are addressed.
The directive came after Sikh legislators and Cabinet ministers appeared before the Akal Takht to discuss concerns surrounding the recently enacted anti-sacrilege law.
Jathedar directed the Punjab government to keep the implementation of the legislation in abeyance and carry out necessary amendments within one month.
The Akal Takht said the objections to the Act should first be resolved through consultations, following which the revised legislation can be taken forward. The religious body maintained that the amendments should be completed within the stipulated one-month period.
