Cananda’s MPs urge Indian High Commission for probe into Johal’s case
Ottawa, November 17, 2017: Canada’s Liberal Party MPs Randeep Singh Sarai and Raj Grewal have urged the Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Vikas Swaroop to investigate into alleged detention of UK citizen Jagtar Singh Johal’s case.
In a joint letter to the High Commissioner, both MPs have expressed deep concern over the allegations of torture and lack of due process in the case by the police in Punjab. The MPs, who are also lawyers, however expressed faith in criminal justice system in Punjab.
“I’m passing on the concerns of Canadian who understand that the due process of law must be respected in any democracy. Jagtar Singh Johal deserves these fundamental human rights,” commented Sarai.
Johal was in India to get married was allegedly detained since November 4, 2017 for his involvement in target killings in Punjab. There were allegations that he was being denied access to his legal counsel and consular services from the British High Commission which is the right of every British citizen.
