Keeping in view the distortions about the role of Sikhs, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has planned to rewrite history of Punjab. Announcing this decision, Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar, President of SGPC said that a special will be formed by the SGPC to rewrite the history. The panel would have young writers with open mind and new ideas, he added.
Prof Badungar, while presiding over a seminar on the 'Role of the Sikhs in Freedom Struggle" also announced that SGPC will to bring out anthology of all the freedom fighters from Punjab with their brief profiles in general with special reference to their neglect in the narrative of Cellular Jail, Andaman that was known as the Kala Pani.
Commenting on the distortion on the issue of the role Sikhs in the context of Kale Pani Prof Badungar announced to form panel to look into look into it. He said that the panel would visit the Cellular Jail and meet the authorities concerned to rectify the distortions. He said the Sikhs had not been given due place in the freedom struggle by the successive governments and historians.
He spoke at length on the contribution of Bhai Maharaj Singh, who was the first freedom fighter of the country as he started his struggle in 1849. He rejected the thesis of 1857 mutiny being the first freedom struggle of the country.
He said the contribution of the Sikhs starting from the time of Guru Nanak against the rulers was unparalleled and unprecedented. He regretted that the same had not been paid due attention. The 10th Lord, Guru Gobind Singh, was the supreme example of extreme sacrifice. Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed his life for maintaining diverse character of the society.
Prof Badungar regretted that at the broader level, their contribution to the cause of humanity had not been given due recognition in history. He also held the Sikh intellectuals for this sorry state of affairs.
He said a deputation would also meet the Union Minister for Tourism and Culture at the centre in the context of skewed narrative of Cellular Jail.
The deputation would also call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demand space to the Sikhs proportionate to their struggle for the country.

Akali Dal MP from Anandpur Sahib Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, who had raised this issue in the Lok Sabha after a write up by senior journalist Jagtar Singh appeared in the media, he said Union Minister Anant Kumar had given the assurance to review the light and sound programme staged in the Cellular Jail that is now a national monument attracting hundreds of visitors every day. Prof Chandumajra asserted the struggle to get proper space to the Sikhs in the history of the country would be taken to the logical conclusion.
Justice S N Aggarwal (retd) and author of 'Cellular Jail, narrated his own experience of his two year stay at Andaman during which period he was also Inspector General of Prisons. He narrated in detail as to how the freedom fighters were tortured there.
Jagtar Singh pressed for re-writing of history and preparation of anthology of freedom fighters. He highlighted the various issues which he himself witnessed during his visit to Andeman.
Dr Gurdarshan Kaur, daughter-in-law of Dr Diwan Singh Kalewani, who was martyred during Japanese occupation of Andaman, was honoured on the occasion. S. Amarjit Singh Chawla, General Secretary, SGPC, presented the vote of thanks. Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha conducted the stage proceedings.
