PU student succumbs to injury after violent clash

Chandigarh, March 29, 2025 – A tragic incident unfolded at Punjab University (PU) on Friday night during a live performance by Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma when a violent brawl erupted between two student groups behind the stage.
The altercation quickly escalated into a brutal knife attack, leaving several students injured and resulting in the death of a second-year student, Aditya Thakur.
According to initial police reports, the fight broke out due to an unknown dispute, leading one group to launch a knife attack on the other.
Aditya Thakur, a student from Himachal Pradesh, suffered multiple stab wounds and was rushed to PGI Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Several other students sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical care.
Eyewitnesses and CCTV footage indicate that after an argument, one group called for reinforcements and suddenly launched an attack with sharp weapons. Despite the large crowd at the event, security measures appeared to be lacking, raising serious concerns about campus safety.
Police have registered a murder case and are analyzing CCTV footage to identify the assailants. However, no arrests have been made so far. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the dispute and whether non-students were involved in the attack.
The tragic incident has left the university community in shock, demanding stricter security measures to prevent such violent clashes in the future.
