Chandigarh, June 11, 2026: The Congress high command has initiated an exercise to assess the political situation in Punjab and revamp the state unit by appointing a three-member team of observers.
According to a communication issued by Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, the party president has nominated
Ajay Maken, Meenakshi Natarajan, and Bhajan Lal Jatav
as observers to study the prevailing political situation in Punjab, review the internal affairs of the state Congress, and submit a detailed report.
Sources indicate that the decision to constitute the three-member observers' panel was taken after Congress President and Rahul Gandhi held separate meetings with Punjab leaders in recent days and sought their views on the party's organisational and political condition in the state.
The move suggests that the Congress high command has not yet reached a final decision regarding the future leadership of the Punjab Congress and intends to first obtain a ground-level assessment before considering any changes in the state leadership.
The Congress has traditionally followed this approach, preferring to send observer teams and seek detailed reports before making major organisational changes rather than announcing an immediate change in state leadership. Punjab, in particular, has witnessed similar exercises on several occasions in the past.
It is notable that the decision to appoint the observers was taken following a meeting held in New Delhi on Thursday, attended by state Congress presidents and party in-charges from across the country. The meeting reportedly reviewed preparations for the Assembly elections due next year in Punjab and other states, with discussions focusing on strengthening the party organisation and electoral strategy.
