Chandigarh, July 19, 2025: In a sudden and surprising move, Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Kapil Raj, who played a key role in the arrest of two sitting Chief Ministers—Arvind Kejriwal and Hemant Soren—has resigned from service.
According to an order issued by the Finance Ministry on Thursday, the President of India has accepted his resignation.Kapil Raj, aged 45, is a 2009 batch IRS officer. At the time of his resignation, he was posted as Additional Commissioner in the GST Intelligence branch in Delhi.
With around 15 years of service still remaining, his resignation has sparked intense speculation across bureaucratic and political circles.
During his tenure with the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Kapil Raj was involved in several major investigations.
His most high-profile assignments included the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, both accused in separate corruption and money laundering cases.
Sources suggest that Kapil Raj cited “personal reasons” for stepping down. However, given his pivotal role in politically sensitive cases, the timing and nature of his resignation are raising eyebrows.
Typically, IRS officers serve until the age of 60. Kapil Raj’s early departure, especially after being in the spotlight for headline-making arrests, is being viewed as a potential signal of deeper developments within the bureaucracy.
