At Last, UP Gets Regular DGP

New Delhi, June 1, 2026: Uttar Pradesh has finally appointed a full-time Director General of Police (DGP), bringing an end to nearly four years of interim leadership in the state's police force.
Senior IPS officer Rajeev Krishna, belonging to the 1991 batch, has been officially named the state’s permanent DGP. Prior to this regular appointment, Krishna had been serving as the acting DGP of Uttar Pradesh since June 2025. During his tenure as the interim chief, he also held the additional responsibilities of Director General (Vigilance) and Chairman of the Police Recruitment and Promotion Board.
His formal elevation to the top post follows the standard empanelment process conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which shortlists eligible senior officers for the state's apex police position.
This development marks the conclusion of a prolonged ad-hoc phase that originally began after the removal of former DGP Mukul Goyal in May 2022. Since Goyal's departure, the state's law enforcement apparatus had seen a continuous series of acting police chiefs, including D.S. Chauhan, R.K. Vishwakarma, Vijay Kumar, and Prashant Kumar, before finally securing a permanent head.
