Punjab: Police nab two drug smugglers after fierce encounter

Kapurthala (Punjab), July 25, 2025: A dramatic encounter unfolded in Punjab’s Kapurthala district as police arrested two major drug smugglers after an exchange of gunfire late Thursday night.
The operation led to the seizure of 15 kilograms of heroin and illegal firearms, potentially unraveling links to an international drug trafficking network. Acting on intelligence inputs, Kapurthala police launched a targeted operation after learning that two smugglers were transporting heroin and weapons from Amritsar to Kapurthala in a car.
When the police attempted to intercept the suspects, the duo opened fire on the officers. One of the smugglers was injured in retaliatory fire, while the other was apprehended without injury. No police personnel were harmed in the shootout.
Police recovered 15 kg of heroin, valued in crores on the international market, along with illegal weapons.The smugglers are currently in custody, and interrogation is underway to identify their supply chain and intended recipients of the contraband.
According to police sources, the arrested individuals may be part of a larger, Pakistan-backed international drug syndicate. Authorities are now pursuing leads to uncover and dismantle the entire network.
Speaking on the operation, SSP Gaurav Toora stated, "This encounter is part of Punjab Police's ongoing crackdown against the drug menace. We are fully committed to eliminating these networks from the root, and more such actions will follow in the coming days."
