Chandigarh, September 27, 2024 – Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal, informed that October 5, 2024 (Saturday), the polling day for the General Election to the Haryana Legislative Assembly, will be observed as a paid holiday.
This applies to all eligible voters employed in government offices, corporations, educational institutions, industrial establishments, shops, factories, and commercial businesses within Haryana.
In this regard, a notification has been issued by the Chief Secretary, Haryana on September 18, 2024. According to the notification, under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881, and Section 135-B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, all employees working in government offices, corporations, educational institutions of the state, who are registered voters of Haryana, will be granted a paid holiday on October 5, 2024.
Additionally, the Chief Secretary has notified that employees working in various factories, shops, and private establishments located in Haryana, who are registered voters of Haryana, will also be granted a paid holiday on October 5, 2024, under Section 135-B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
In this regard, the Labour Department has also issued a notification under Section 28 of the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958, and Section 65 of the Factories Act, 1948. Strict action will be taken as per the rules for violations of these provisions.
Agarwal stated that there will be no deduction in wages for employees granted this holiday. Government employees, including those in educational institutions, will be entitled to special casual leave.
Adult workers in factories are exempt from work on the polling day under Section-65 of the Factories Act, 1948. It was informed that employees working in Delhi who are registered voters of Haryana will also be granted a paid holiday.
A letter in this regard was issued by the Office Of Commissioner (Labour), Government of NCT of Delhi.
Similarly, neighboring states, including Punjab, UT Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, through their competent authority, have also released notifications granting a paid holiday on October 5, 2024, for registered voters of Haryana working in their respective state to ensure they can exercise their right to vote.
The Chief Electoral Officer encourages all eligible voters to participate in this democratic process and cast their vote on October 5, 2024.
