Language Deptt celebrates World Book Day with intellectual discussion on art of reading
Ferozepur, April 24, 2025: In a distinctive initiative, the District Language Office, Ferozepur, observed International Book Day with a special literary event titled “Choosing and Understanding Books” held at the District Library under the supervision of Dr. Jagdeep Sandhu, District Language Officer.
Welcoming the guests and attendees, Dr. Sandhu highlighted the importance of World Book Day, stating that books play a crucial role in shaping cultured human beings and serve as a medium for passing knowledge from one generation to the next.
Prominent speakers Sukhjinder and Sam Gurvinder, both avid readers and thinkers, engaged the audience in an in-depth discussion on the significance of books in human life. They connected literature with human existence and global perspectives, making the session deeply reflective and relatable.
Sukhjinder emphasized the importance of being emotionally moved and intellectually provoked by literature, asserting that if a book fails to spark thought or emotion, one is perhaps disconnected from the true essence of reading. He noted that selecting and engaging with meaningful literature is a skill developed through personal experience, often guided by teachers.
Sam Gurvinder elaborated on how storytelling, an integral part of human nature, creates lasting impressions. He discussed how different moods call for different genres and advised keeping a variety of books handy to read during travel or idle time. Citing global literary classics alongside Punjabi literature, he also introduced the audience to online resources and genres to explore.
The event saw thoughtful participation from students and readers alike. Vivekananda World School students Tarinder Singh and Arpanpreet Kaur shared impactful views on the role of education and books. Reader Jaspal Singh recited a poem, adding to the literary ambiance.
Dr. S.N. Rudra, retired professor and Director of Vivekananda World School, graced the event as chief guest. He praised the insightful presentations by both speakers and commended the District Language Office and Punjab Language Department for organizing such a meaningful event.
